Ex-girlfriend battered in his home, Shady insists he was not involved

Last week a beautiful woman’s face was pistol-whipped by a masked intruder at a suburban Atlanta home owned by LeSean McCoy, Buffalo Bills running back.   The battered woman is his ex-girlfriend, a model who’s named –- how fitting is this? -– Delicia Cordon.

A friend posted horrifying photos of her bloodied face and blamed McCoy, who’s nicknamed – how fitting is this? – Shady.

The friend, who calls herself “Mia” posted other Shady deeds, even suggesting he beat his dog Henny so forcefully the animal suffered kidney failure.

Delicia, 34, theorized that Shady, 30, set up the 3 a.m. home invasion from a remote location.   She said her attacker demanded specific items of jewelry.

Her lawyer, Tanya Mitchell Graham, said McCoy had asked his ex to return the jewelry he’d given her and had warned that she could be robbed, given the value of the jewelry.

She was recorded in a 911 call saying the intruder “took my diamond bracelet off my wrist,” and, “I thlnk this has something to do with my ex-boyfriend.”

A couple of days later, Delicia’s lawyer told CBS News her client “is no longer certain” Shady was involved in the crime.

Then to another reporter the lawyer said – as only a lawyer would — that Cordon was “not backtracking.”

I suppose this depends on what the meaning of the word “backtracking” is.    Perhaps she wasn’t moving in reverse but was merely stalled, not knowing which way to go.   And wondering what legal problems she created for her social media director Mia.

As the crime reporters like to say, this story has legs.  Right now the sports crime beat is hotter than I can ever remember.

In two weeks we’ve seen: (1) Tampa QB Jameis Winston suspended for groping a female Uber driver; (2) College Pitcher of the Year Luke Heimlich revealed as a former child molester; (3) Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) accused of ignoring sexual assaults against wrestlers he was coaching at OSU.

And now (4) Shady.

What an unfortunate nickname when the law is looking at you.  But he earned it innocently enough, from his mom, who labeled him for being an especially moody baby, laughing one minute, crying the next.  Of course she meant Shady in the best sense of the term.

What’s more unfortunate is that this is not the first time he’s been linked to crime.  In February 2016, when he was a Philadelphia Eagle, McCoy was cited in a police report throwing punches in a brawl in the Recess night club.

Two officers were hospitalized with injuries, but McCoy was not charged after a two-month investigation.  “Insufficient evidence,” said the DA.

The NFL also investigated and assessed no punishment against the player.  It’s investigating this latest episode, still trying to determine the real McCoy.

Interesting tweet from McCoy: “I have not had any direct contact with any of the people involved in months.”

What does he mean, “people involved”?

And what does he mean with direct contact as opposed to indirect?

Delicia said a camera system was operating at the time of the break-in, but the intruder knew how to avoid it.  Perhaps he was a once-trusted friend of McCoy who now saw an opportunity to enrich himself at the expense of his friend’s jilted lover.

When Shady and Delicia split last June – after, she said, they discussed marriage — she was classic Woman Scorned, ex-lovebird singing like a canary.   Shady, worried about revenge she might take on his favorite real estate, began eviction proceedings against Cordon.

McCoy in July called police to the house and showed them piles of her clothing he had moved to the driveway.  The police told him he could not remove her possessions until the eviction was approved.  The New York Times quoted a police report that said “he was very concerned that Cordon may either take things or make false accusations about him.”

McCoy said that much of the jewelry Cordon was claiming as hers was actually on loan from high-end retailers to be used at charity-boosting events – valuable publicity for the jeweler, as well as for Delicia and her career as a fashionista, and it puts Shady in a good light.  He strongly disputed her story that he was asking her to return a birthday present.

So how personal did this get?  Shortly after the breakup Cordon posted on Instagram that she caught “lil dick” McCoy cheating on her with an escort, who appeared with him in a posted photo.

Could it be she’s made an undisclosed settlement with McCoy?   Perhaps he lets her have all the jewelry and he pays her legal expenses and she agrees to press no charges against him or tweet about him.  Just guessing.
